5 Reasons why Electric Vehicles (EVs) is not the future of commuting.

Government’s and Automobile Companies from North America, Europe and Asia have announced bold targets promising that but 2030 to 2035 all new vehicles released in the market will be full-electric. Are these goals achievable? The future is promising but also challenging.

During the last decade  we have seen many steps towards electrification of commuting, Tesla is probably the most recognizable and successful. Following Tesla’s example all the big Automobile companies-brands have released EVs and promised that ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles is the past. Regulatory Authorities have also announced that ICE vehicles will be banned in the next decade. Can the industry with the help of governments achieve these goals in the next decade? Lets see some real problems

EVs are more expensive that ICE vehicles

If you want to buy a new electric car then you have to pay on average 30% more that a petrol-diesel car. The most expensive part of an EV is the lithium-battery they use. In average is 30%-40% of the vehicles cost. Even will several different discounts (Tax and ownership cost) buying a petrol-diesel car is still the choice for an average family.

EVs are not convenient for long distances

If you want to drive long distances recharging the battery can be time consuming. In average the recharging time in a station is 45 min for 80% charge. Depending on the vehicle that translate in 150km-200km range. So its understandable that a 5 hour trip can take more time with an EV. Now to be fair fast charging station are popping up in the highways but still the infrastructure is the secondary roads is missing.

Cost of electricity is only getting higher

Meaning that every year the cost of charging your electric car is getting more and more expensive. Fossil-fuel is also getting more expensive . In most country’s the electricity is being generated by fossil-fuel. There is no prediction that energy cost will get cheaper. Due to inflation, war and economic crises is safe to say that it will only get higher.

 EVs are not emission-free vehicles

Think of your electric car as a huge smart-phone. You plug it and charge it . Now if you want to use it every day then you have to charge it a lot. At the moment fossil fuel is the way electricity is produced most of the time. The cycle it’s actually ironic  you burn oil to provide electricity to the grid and charge your devices but your vehicle is emission free! Also the extraction of lithium and cobalt, key minerals for the battery production, is heavily criticised for causing heavy pollution and bad working condition.

The future of commuting is public not private

By 2030 80% of the total population will live in big cities. These create a huge challenge in transportation that can not be addressed with the logic one car for one person. These can be great for Auto companies. There is just not enough space. Electrical Bikes and public transportation is the way to go for a greener city  with low emission’s

These are some points why electrification it’s not the future. At the moment hybrid cars and plug in hybrid cars seem to be the future. 5 Reasons why Hybrid cars are winning over EVs
