“Men can have a baby blues period, just like women. It’s an adjustment period, getting used to sleep changes and new roles and responsibilities, Fathers who are young, have a history of depression, experience relationship problems or are struggling financially are most at risk of postpartum depression. Postpartum depression in fathers — sometimes called paternal postpartum depression — can have the same negative effect on partner relationships and child development.

I Gave Birth, but My Husband Developed Postpartum Depression

Many men struggle with mental health after becoming fathers. But stigma and societal norms keep them from getting help.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, my husband and I took a parent prep class in which they talked at length about the signs of maternal postpartum depression. My husband took detailed notes. After all, I had a history of depression and occasionally fell down dark, deep rabbit holes from which only medication and therapy could pull me out. check 

 

How do men deal with PPD?

Like women, men have access to PPD medications like antidepressants. Men should also explore other avenues of psychiatry, including counseling, psychotherapy (i.e., “talk therapy”), or support from other mental health professionals.
