Where Do Tortillas Come From?

 

Tortillas have been around for a long time. Did you know they began eating them over 2,000 years ago with the Aztecs and Mayans, who made them from ground corn. Corn was sacred, so tortillas became a symbol of tradition, family, and everyday life, a meaning they still carry today. 

I find it so interesting, Tortillas are a shared family food. We eat a lot of Tortillas in our family. I think we need to introduce Tortilla day. 

 

Are Tortillas Healthy?

 

Absolutely Corn tortillas are naturally low‑fat, gluten‑free, and full of fibre. Flour tortillas are richer but still fit into a balanced diet. 

Tortillas provide you with:

  • A lighter option than heavy breads
  • Healthy fillings

Having Salsa in your tortillas provides you with:

  • Vitamin C and antioxidants benefits from the tomatoes in the Salsa

When we think of tortillas we think of eating them more in summer. They are also a good winter option.

Changing the fillings to something warm and comforting:

  • Chilli
  • Warm Shredded beef
  • Warm spicy Chicken
  • Roasted winter vegetables (carrots, parsnips, squash) with herbs
  • Grilled peppers with melted cheese

Here Is a Simple Homemade Tortilla Recipe (Simple and Low Cost)

 

Ingredients:


2 cups of flour (or corn masa), ½ tsp salt, 2 tbsp oil, ¾ cup warm water

 

Steps:


Mix ingredients together → knead → roll into balls → flatten → cook 30–40 seconds per side in a frying pan.


Place on a plate ready for your fillings. Yummy.

 

Simple Ingredients to Put in Your Tortillas;

 

Vegetables:

  • Chopped tomatoes
  • lettuce
  • Peppers
  • Onions
  • Sweetcorn
    Cheese:
  • Grated cheddar
  • Mozzarella or Mexican‑style cheese
  • Salsa; Mild, medium or spicy salsa for extra flavour
